Hatton Boxing

Hatton boxing section of the Academy is primarily focussed on fitness and strength conditioning, whilst having fun too. It uses proven techniques developed by World Champion boxer Ricky Hatton and fitness coach John Eade. We recently expanded the program to include Mittmaster Matt content too. While the primary focus is on fitness, strength and conditioning;  correct boxing techniques & pad work are taught at the same time and in a progressive manner. We intend to improve your strength and fitness, burn off calories and give you basic boxing skills, both defensive and offensive, the ability to hold pads safely and throw boxing combinations. We also explore further boxing techniques as used by Champion boxers within the program which will appeal to boxing fans.

Offensive boxing basics such as jab, hook, cross, uppercut as well as defensive techniques such as slip, duck and weave and shoulder rolls, along with stance and footwork. Exercises include burpees, press-ups, planks and other similar body weight exercises. We may on occasion use kettlebells as supplementary training although that is not officially part of the program. We also add a section of  boxing drills and games, as part of the warm down. We aim to create a community of fitness boxers who actively support and encourage each other in their fitness and boxing goals, along with having great fun sessions! There is no contact sparring and all boxing work is with focus mitts and some shadow boxing with the primary aim being fitness.

Angus Rutherford is Elite Level Hatton Boxing instructor having been taught the fundamentals, advanced and elite level by master instructor Kevin Wright in 2018/19. Angus continues to extend his knowledge, and continues his studies with Mittmaster Matt Chapman. In 2022 he qualified as certified Mittmaster Boxing Pad Holder Level 1. He has done further boxing training courses with Dave Rimmer and continues studying with the Hatton and Mittmaster programs.  He also brings  over 3 decades of Karate experience, along with experience in kali and various other martial arts.

We teach the formal Hatton program, but also use drills and techniques from other coaches too, primarily from Matt Chapman. We feel that the Hatton program is perfectly structured in order to teach the fundamentals in a progressive manner with the right balance  of fitness and boxing technique and Mittmaster complements and adds to these giving variety and further techniques.
