The Edinburgh Karate Academy runs classes in Buckstone & Fairmilehead (Edinburgh South). Our aim is to make the classes both fun, practical and relevant to today's society within a safe and inclusive environment. Flexibility, strength, balance and co-ordination are improved with exercises ranging from conventional such as sit-ups through stretching and breathing exercises. All sessions start with a comprehensive warm up and end with a warm down. This is in a controlled manner and tailored towards the individual. Self defence is taught as a part of the art and students are encouraged to react in pressure situations. Students have the option to compete in association/national WKF tournaments and there are numerous courses throughout the year with national and international instructors.

We run 3 different classes: Karate Kids (up to P4); Karate Juniors (P5-S2) & Karate Seniors (S3 up to and including adult). The syllabus followed is Shukokai International syllabus. The classes are structured for the age groups with the younger group being more game based whilst still teaching good solid Karate.

The style of Karate we practice is Shukokai (Tani Ha Shito Ryu). We are affiliated to Shukokai International, headed by Soke Kunio Miyake. We are affiliated to the Scottish Governing Body (SKGB) through our membership of KKD Shukokai Scotland. Our European chief instructor Graham McCann is based in Glasgow. Our Worldwide Chief instructor is the head of Shukokai International, Shihan Kunio Miyake. Shihan Miyake visits Scotland roughly every 18 months. We also travel through to Glasgow occasionally to both train and for brown/black belt examinations. Kyu grading is conducted in Edinburgh.

All EKA instructors are Internationally & nationally recognised black belts, have both a valid SKGB Coaching license & Shukokai International coaching licenses. Our instructors have indemnity insurance, first aid training, CRB checks, enhanced disclosure Scotland and are Sports Coach UK full members and attend regular courses on both sports coaching and Karate & associated martial arts courses. All instructors are volunteers and we consider ourselves a community club.

The Club is open to new members and we welcome you to get in touch (contact page) and to attend our sessions.
The first 2 lessons are free.
